Leggiuno is a small town in the province of Varese, overlooking the Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore.
Besides being an important cultural and artistic center, like the other tourist centers of Lake Maggiore, each year attracts many visitors especially during the summer months.
It lies between the municipalities of Laveno Mombello to the north and Monvalle to the south, while to the east it borders Besozzo and Sangiano. The western part of the municipality is directly bathed by the waters of Lake Maggiore, just opposite the magnificent Borromeo Islands.
The Milano Malpensa Airport is just 40 km away. This lovely village is located in a picturesque position on a predominantly hilly area as the name suggests. Leggiuno seems to derive from the Celtic "leze dunum" which translate means “at the bottom of the hill''.
This town offers numerous beauties and activities such as the beaches of Arolo and Reno. The first is a sand beach and the second is a meadow’s one. From May to October, they are full of tourists and locals looking for refreshments in hot weather.

Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso
Leggiuno is known throughout Italy for being the birthplace of Gigi Riva, a stunning athlete nicknamed the "Rumble of Thunder" and one of the best strikers in the history of Italian football. This charming village is also famed for the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, an ancient monastery perched on the waters of the lake, a place of worship and pilgrimage.
The Hermitage can be reached on foot, as well as by Navigazione Laghi boats.
In addition to the Hermitage of Santa Caterina, you can also visit the patron church of Santi Primo and Feliciano next to the Oratory of Pier Giorgio Frassati and also the historic church of San Primo.
In Leggiuno there is no shortage of hotels overlooking Lake Maggiore and restaurants where you can taste local specialties such as lake fish, ideal in summer because it is freshly caught or polenta with game, excellent on cold winter evenings.
