Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso
The Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso is a monastic complex built overlooking the lake on a rock wall: it is certainly one of the most beautiful places of Lake Maggiore.
It was founded by one Alberto Besozzi, a rich local merchant who, after escaping a cloudburst during his crossing of the Lake, retired to a cave, starting a new life as a hermit and becoming a symbol and a reference point of spiritual life. The Hermitage of Saint Catherine is named after the chapel, visible today in the back of the Church, which Blessed Albert dedicated to Saint Catherine of Egypt.

The Hermitage of Santa Caterina is currently managed by a group of Benedictine Oblates who, on behalf of the Province, keep the monastery and welcome the many visitors. It was precisely because of the Province that this place has been put, in recent years, in complete safety by saving it from an almost safe ruin.
The Hermitage of Santa Caterina can be reached by lake and by land: from the square it is possible to descend by panoramic staircase or by a comfortable lift.
