What to see and what to do in Angera
Situated on the Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore, Angera sees the first settlements on its territories since the Upper Paleolithic.
The presence of numerous Roman finds sees the area under its influence at least since the second century BC, when it experienced a strong commercial development due to its position as an important river port.
In the Middle Ages, Angera led a Pieve which comprised towns on either side of the lake. On its territory there were in fact about 20 religious buildings.
From the eleventh century on the site of today's Rocca Borromea there was a fortress which later became the property of the Archbishops of Milan. In the 13th century it passed into the hands of the Visconti family and in 1449 it was purchased by the Borromeo family, current owner.

The Rocca Borromea of Angera
The Rocca Borromea of Angera overlooks the south side of Lake Maggiore.
Its rooms preserve frescoes, paintings and original decorations and houses the Museum of the doll and toy that traces the history of the game of the eighteenth century.
The Museo Diffuso of Angera
Founded in 2016, visiting the Museo Diffuso is the best way to explore Angera and the territory because it hosts dozens of historical and artistic monuments, protected environments, walks and museums. Today, 50 historic, artistic and landscape buildings bring the Museo Diffuso di Angera to life.
The rooms are open-air, between the village, suburbs and hamlets, with the opportunity to explore the preferred historical artistic path on foot or by bicycle. The Museum operates year-round without a schedule.
Archaeological Museum of Angera
The Civic Archeological Museum is located in the center of the village and is housed in a 15th century building which collects the most important historical documentation of the territory.
It offers to the visitors some publications of local and archeological interest and is finally equipped with a lift and toilets also for the disabled, an armchair for relaxation and breastfeeding, a changing table, in addition to a multifunctional room for exhibitions, conferences and educational workshops.
Oasi Bruschera
It is a protected area of about 400 hectares with a large network of trails surrounded by various species such as alders, white willows and reed beds, as well as rare species such as marsh purple and water lilies. The area also includes the island of Partegora, on which to admire a colony of cormorants in recent years.
The oasis can be visited all year round with a variety of flora and fauna according to the period. The itinerary is indicated by various explanatory signs.
What to do in and around Angera
- a picnic by the lake: the lakeshore of Angera is almost unique along Lake Maggiore. The extensive lawns, perfectly maintained, are perfect for a relaxing day in the shade of the trees. There is also a wide selection of bars, restaurants and pizzerias with lake views
- a tour to San Quirico: Better known as the Ring of San Quirico, this trail is a beautiful trail around Monte San Quirico in the municipalities of Ranco and Angera. There are also many viewpoints with spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Worth mentioning is the beautiful church of San Quirico that rises on top of the mountain. The itinerary follows the old road that connected the two municipalities by also passing by some farms famous today for the production of wine and grappa (typical angeresi products)
- visit Stresa and the Borromean Islands: from Angera there are several daily ferries or organized trips that include a visit to the beautiful Borromean Islands. They can be visited in the day thanks to the dense network of transport that connect them at every hour
- visit Arona: with a short trip of 10 minutes by ferry you can reach Arona, right on the side in front of Angera. The pretty Piedmontese town has a lot to offer, both from the historical and cultural point of view, as well as fun and entertainment

How to get to Angera
Angera is easily reached:
- by car: from Milan take the A8 motorway. The recommended exit is that of Sesto Calende/Vergiate from which you continue on the Sempione state road until Sesto Calende and then the provincial road 69 leading to Angera
- by train: it is recommended to get off at the station of Sesto Calende from which then reach Angera by bus or taxi
- by boat: from Arona or other towns on the lake such as Laveno, Intra, Ascona, Stresa there are daily ferry connections thanks to Navigazione Lago Maggiore
