Places to see and to visit in Oggebbio
Parish church of S. Pietro
Oggebbio is dominated by the bell tower of the parish church of S. Pietro di Gonte, the main village, which with its 42 meters is the highest in the Upper Verbano. It was a chapel of the parish church of S. Vittore di Intra from which it separated in 1606.
Villa Anelli
Villa Anelli is a private garden, a splendid example of landscape architecture from the Romantic era and now houses a rich collection of camellias, recognized worldwide. It was built in 1872 along the rocky slopes of the Paradiso Valley. The garden went through different stages of conception until it welcomed the cultivars of camellia from the second half of the twentieth century. Today, these flowers make valuable corners of verdant and winding paths interrupted by the sound of ancient fountains.
Oratories of Santa Maria and Sant'Agata
In the Gonte-Cadessino hamlet there is an oratory dedicated to Santa Maria or Madonna della Misericordia, built between the 13th and 14th centuries on the site of a pre-existing 11th century church of which the bell tower remains. Remodeled over the course of the following centuries, the church retains two cycles of fifteenth-century frescoes and a beautiful high altar that is a splendor of polychrome marble. In a niche you can admire a beautiful wooden statue of the Immaculate Virgin.
In the hamlet of Novaglio, on the hill overlooking the lake, the Oratory of Sant’Agata stands. The Romanesque structure was incorporated in the 14th century in an extension that created the upstream façade, with the addition of Gothic and Renaissance elements. A legend tells that this Ecclesia campestris antiqua (1590) is one of the hundred churches built in the 4th century by Saints Julius and Julian who spread Christianity in the Novarese and Verbano lands.
Port of Spasolo
The ancient port of Spazzolé (Spasolo), equipped with a hospice for travelers in the 14th century, was the site of intense lake traffic for centuries. At the turn of the last century the port of Spasolo, now adequately renovated, was a meeting place for the people of Oggebbio as the boat allowed the transit of men and goods in Verbania and then, by rail, in Milan. The boat was conceived as an umbilical cord with the world.
